In the period from 1873 to 1877 Scottish photographer John Thomson, along with the journalist Adolphe Smith documented the lives of the urban poor in London.
The results of their work titled "Street life in London" were issued each month in parts, and then left and a single volume. Documentary images of street vendors, beggars and other street dwellers were combined with interviews, essays and reports that could not be better demonstrated poverty as a sociological problem that is necessary to study and look for methods to combat it.
This project was one of the first examples of documentary photography on a social theme and set the tone for such photographers and fighters against social inequality and injustice of the next century, Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine.
