One of the sponsors of the Olympic Games, Samsung has decided to give athletes smartphone Galaxy Note 8 "Olympic edition". This model does not go on sale, it is specially released for the Games. But a nice gesture turned into a scandal. Gifts received all but 22 athletes from North Korea and four athletes from Iran. Athletes could not estimate the phones, because their country was under UN sanctions. In both countries shall be prohibited to supply luxury items and goods that could theoretically be used for military purposes. A phone fit the definition of "luxury", because the price of the usual Galaxy Note 8 in South Korea is about a thousand dollars.

Iran on the organizers of the Games took offense and accused them of discrimination. Iranian news agency FARS has removed from its website all Samsung banners and temporarily stopped advertising partnership with the company. Iran's Foreign Ministry called after South Korea and demanded an apology. Ambassador warned that this episode could have "serious negative consequences" for Samsung.

The head of the National Olympic Committee referred the matter to the International Olympic Committee. After that, the IOC announced that the phones will be provided to all athletes, without exception. Iranian athletes were allowed to leave the phones themselves. North Korean athletes also gave gifts, but after the Games they will have to return smartphones.
