In 1960, an American photographer from Life magazine Carl Mydans (Carl Mydans) visited the Astrakhan fish canning, refrigeration plant, where he was able to observe the process of sturgeon caviar production from fish catch, and ending with the conservation of the finished product. In that year, the share of the Soviet Union accounted for 93% of all caviar sturgeon and beluga produced in the world.
